You Are What This World Needs mural

Earlier in 2024 I was assigned an artist spot in the Brisbane Street Art Festival program, with a 5.5m high wall in Kelvin Grove my blank canvas. I’ve been applying for a spot with BSAF for a couple of years with no luck, so I was stoked when I found out 2024 was my year.

To date, I had never attempted a mural at this scale and was way out of my comfort zone. I needed all the help I could get, which included rallying up a team of ten volunteers. In the end, it took 100 hours over a two week period. Even with the scaffolding, some parts of the mural were close to impossible to reach accurately, and most of the time we needed to strap paintbrushes to sticks or support a ladder whilst one person was up painting tiny dots. Drawing a hundred dots on the digital artwork looked cool at the time, not so cool when trying to paint them in real life haha!

This little section is the top of the mural, which faces Herston Road. There’s a staircase on the left hand side of this wall that connects the two spaces, so I call this baby mural the taste tester before the main meal ;) Inspo behind the artwork is based on the reminder that no matter who you are or your walk of life, you are exactly what this world needs. It’s no mistake that you’re here for a reason - God has an incredible purpose and future for you. It’s nice that this wall is near a set of traffic lights so people who are sitting in their cars at a red light can get a little mood boost.

Here’s a little reel recap of the whole process on the ‘gram.

Want to check it out IRL? You can find it at 3 Franklin Street, Kelvin Grove, Queensland.
